Bike the Art Trails of Kilkenny

Ride or walk the streets of Kilkenny to Woodville Park and see the art work of professional and or emerging artists along with naive designs by community members displayed on stobie poles, in paste ups, fence art and on walls. The last two years have seen this neighbourhood pick up a paintbrush or shovel and alter their environment, one brush stroke or shovel full at a time. The Bike or Walking Trails of Kilkenny were held for the first time in 2017. We hope to hold them yearly in the future during the SALA Festival. There are a number of routes and maps that might like to take in the area. Please click below for the entire guide (7MBs) or download a separate map for a specific walk or area.   The full Art Trails Guide  (79 pages) Bike Trail Map and Artist list (2 pages) Walking Trail Map and Artist list (2 pages) Children’s Bike Trail Map and Artist list (2 pages) Woodville Park Trail (walking or riding) and Artist list (2 pages)   For enquires or to become involved please contact: Tracey or Eugene 8243 0001 gorillaart@tpg.com.au...

Alice Guymer

This pole was painted by Jackie Reichstein, a local Kilkenny Artist, her blurb about the piece is detailed below. To see more of Jackie’s work please visit http://bit.ly/2przeVh ‘This is a depiction of Alice Guymer the daughter of builder George Guymer that built and lived in my house which was built around 1890. He also built the row cottages across the road and both homes next to us. Alice ran the shop and post office next door so she was one of Adelaide’s first female business women. I procrastinated over this design as it had to have meaning to Kilkenny and our historic...

Kilkenny Train Station Group

In August 1999 the former West Croydon/Kilkenny Neighbourhood Watch adopted the Kilkenny Railway Station. The first ‘Busy Bee’ took place on Saturday 9 September 2000 with 11 people in attendance. Two of the original volunteers Jean and Gino Chinca are still involved. Over the years many improvements have been made to the station such as sleepers being added, plants being planted in the garden and the benches added. The work is carried out on the 2nd Saturday of the month from 9am to 11am. For several years the work was carried out by 4 dedicated volunteers, Jean and Gino Chinca and Kaye and James Borgas. Over the years they contained the weeding, watered, pruned, picked up rubbish and engaged in a general up keep. In September 2015 the local ‘Gorilla Art’ group became involved and now we have quite a few extra helpers and volunteers. In 2016 the Kilkenny Railway Station along with the Wilpena Terrace upgrades and local pole painting won an award in the Charles Sturt Spring Garden Competition. Over the years there has been many positive compliments given about how good the station is looking. DATES FOR 2017 10 June, 8 July, 12 August, 9 September, 14 October, 11 November and 9 December. From 9 am to 10.30 am. Back in the day …

Back in the day …

Kilkenny has had a rich history of transportation. We once had a a tram that travelled down Torrens Road, we have a train running every 15 to 30 minutes from the city to Grange or the Port, Holdens used to produces cars on the corner of nearby Addison and Port Roads and there was once a milkies horse called RUSTY that lived in our street. My neighbour when I first moved into the district 16 years ago was a long term employee of the now extinct and soon to be more extinct Holden’s.  The council has recently put in a bike track that runs down the side of the railway line for people to bike in and out of the city. And in all honest if you had to walk into the city of Adelaide you could within about an hour. And there is a tram that runs from the Entertainment Centre down in nearby Brompton and Bowden.  So we are kind of swamped for options when it comes to transportation within our area.   To find out more and get involved with Gorilla Art please click here.
